Finnish Port Association joins One Sea bringing the support of 30 ports to smart and autonomous maritime transport system

1 February 2019

FPA represents 30 Finnish port authorities on national level and EU decision making. This expertise is now combined with One Sea to promote the development of autonomous maritime transport system as seamless and intelligent logistic chains of transport including ports as hubs of logistic chains.

Finnish Port Association promotes the competitiveness of Finnish ports by communicating and presenting the views of ports to decision makers involved.  FPA’s members include 30 port companies and industrial ports in Finland. Around 95% of the whole volume of Finnish foreign trade imports and exports are transported via FPA member ports.

FPA sees the cooperation with One Sea ecosystem, which leads the way towards an operating autonomous maritime ecosystem by 2025, as joining the forces in preparing the way for the future maritime traffic.

“Finnish ports are being more and more involved with the huge change in transport logistics. Port Association sees that stepping onboard is a tremendous opportunity to facilitate the change”, says Annaleena Mäkilä, the Managing Director of Finnish Port Association.

“Looking very much forward to co-operate with One Sea ecosystem and DIMECC”, adds Ms. Mäkilä.

One Sea is an ecosystem which gathers together leading marine experts and is a strategic combination of top research, state-of-the-art information technology and business. The work began in 2016, and the aim is to create an environment suitable for autonomous ships by 2025.

Having the Finnish Port Association as part of the ecosystem is an important achievement for One Sea Ecosystem.

“We are very excited to have the Finnish Port Association joining the One Sea. Ports are the hubs connecting maritime transport to other modes of transportation. Ports are an essential part of current and future maritime transport. Having this expertise in One Sea is extremely valuable”, says Jukka Merenluoto, the Ecosystem Lead of One Sea.

The branch organisation’s representation of Finnish port authorities and industrial ports on national level and EU decision making supplements the expertise of One Sea partners. The ecosystem consists of industry members ABB, Cargotec, Ericsson, Rolls-Royce, Tieto, Finnpilot Pilotage and Wärtsilä and organisational partners Finnish Marine Industries, Finnish Shipowners’ Association and Shipbrokers Finland.
